VIBE and Billboard have released new lists of Top 50 Greatest Rappers of All Time, putting Jay-Z at the top, and, as usual, the list has caused a stir among hip-hop artists and fans. The channel started releasing the names last month as part of the 50th anniversary of celebrating hip hop.
Top Rappers
The names that appeared first included those of Black Thought, LL Cool J, Rakim, Ice Cube, Lauryn Hill, Andre 3000, and Kanye West before they released the final list of the top 10 artists on February 8 (Wednesday). The artists who took position six to 10 include The Notorious B.I.G., Lil Wayne, Drake, Snoop Dog, and Nicki Minaj, while Kendrick Lamar, Nas, 2Pac, and Eminem occupied position two to five.
But Jay-Z emerged as the top hip-hop artist of all time. This is not the first time Jay-Z has appeared on top of all other artists. Billboard based its selection on entrepreneurial greatness, cultural impact, critical acclaim, and commercial success.
According to Billboard, “longevity, the breadth of Jay-Z’s accomplishments, and what he’s meant to Hip Hop from a musical, cultural, and financial standpoint for the last three decades” make him the greatest of all time.
Social Media Buzz
The announcement by Billboard has caused a stir and excitement on social media, with Jay-Z fans claiming it wasn’t a surprise. One fan said, “Absolutely. Nobody has as many consistently amazing hip hop records as HOV,” while another posted on Twitter that, “Wayne himself says jay is the GOAT. I don’t know why yall pressed [inserted crying face emojis].”
That was not all; one of the greatest fans of Jay Z, called Slim Shady, Said: “Em is the most decorated Rapper in history. Em is the best selling rapper of all time. Em has achieved EGOT status. Has achieved the biggest sold-out shows in rap history. Lose Yourself is the most successful song of all time. Em is the only top selling rapper in top 10 music history.”
However, the fans of Tupac Shakur were not impressed. They believe the artist still stands out among other rappers.
