Latto beat Cardi B, GloRilla, Megan Thee Stallion, Coi Leray, and Nicki Minaj to win the title of the best female Hip Hop Artist, during the 2023 BET awards held on June 25.
More Talented Female Hip Hop Artists Emerging
When she was accepting the award, she thanked the other nominees. She also observed that the category will be more competitive this year and mentioned other women who qualify to get nominated.
“Shout-out to some of the women I think should’ve been nominated,” She said. “Doechii, I love you, baby. Maya The Don, Flo Milli. Oh my god, I can’ think. Mello Buckzz, TiaCorine. Shout-out to all the women. We killin’ it. This is the year of the female, the year of women. Hopefully we gon’ see an all-female tour, you feel me? Very soon. Keep killin’ it.”
She also thanked the unknown man she is dating as she tossed her hair.
Latto’s Energetic BET Performance
She performed her popular song “Put It On Da Floor”. She gave the audience an electrified performance. Cardi B, who collaborated with her on the song’s remix, praised Latto’s BET performance through a tweet.
“That performance ateee down,” Cardi B tweeted
Monaleo also shared her view about the performance terming it as a “mf SHOW”.
On Instagram, she also got congratulatory messages from Remy Ma and Lil Kim, who are successful hip-hop artists based in New York.
This was the first time for Latto to win this award. Megan Thee Stallion won the same category for the last three consecutive years. Nicki Minaj has won the most times since BET started giving the awards in 2001. She has won seven times (2010- 2016) and has also had the most nominations- 13. The winner is chosen depending on the number of sales and the quality of the music they have produced during a given period.
Rappers Should Avoid Beefs
Busta Rhymes was among the hip-hop artists who were honored at the event. He received a lifetime achievement award and shed tears while giving his acceptance speech. In the speech, he advised rappers to stop having trivial grudges against each other.
Mariah Carey, Dave Chappelle, Missy Elliott, Janet Jackson, Pharrell, and Diddy paid tribute to Busta in a video presentation. There was also a video tribute showcasing his numerous contributions throughout his music career as a producer, songwriter, actor, and rapper.
