Dave Chappelle is not a stranger to controversy, but it seems like he irked people who won’t relent in pursuing justice.
Following outrage from the LGBTQ community, the First Avenue host in Minneapolis has pulled the plug on the July 20 show. The venue released the tweet at midnight to its staff, community, and artists asking for their understanding of the decision.
The Show Moves to Varsity Theater
The venue called off the show just hours before the comedian made it to the iconic stage in Minnesota. It has since shifted to the nearby Varsity Theater.
While making a case for their decision, First Avenue said they aspire to make their venues safe. They also confirmed that they believe in diverse voices and artistic expression.
The LGBTQ Community is Aggrieved by ‘The Closer’ Series
In 2021, Dave Chappelle’s comedy show premiered on Netflix. It featured the hateful rant from Dababy against the community and dehumanized transgenders like Caitlyn Jenner.
The comedian further threw jabs at the community insinuating that they were disingenuous and hypocritical in overlooking his self-defense murder case at a North Carolina Walmart in 2019 over the anti-LGBTQ comments.
Following the consistent tirade and the mean remarks about gay and transgender people, the community has drawn the line. An Ohio-based trans activist Taylor Ashbrook says that she has established that the motive for the jokes comes from a place of malice.
Will Someone Attack Dave Chappelle Again?
The motive for the assault on stage by the 23-year-old Isaiah Lee is no longer a mystery given the pain the comedian causes to other people. The artist is however unshaken by the incident, and he has been carrying on with his shows unperturbed.
Will Dave Chappelle follow the Travis Scott example of damage control and backtrack his words? No one knows for sure. In the meantime, ticket holders can utilize their tickets for the rescheduled show.
