Dr. Dre was among the latest hip hop veterans that Kevin Hart interviewed on his program Hart to Heart. He was not shy about sharing his opinions on his fellow hip hop artists who are unhappy about the current state of Hip Hop.
Some are even criticizing the young rappers who are made up pf Gen-Zs and millennials. Other famous hip hop artists of his caliber who have discussed this issue with kevin Hart are Ice Cube and Jay-Z.
50 Cent is one of the older rappers who has been critical of the new rappers. In an interview with Houston 97.9 in 2022, he said that the young rappers are copying old rap music instead of creating new and unique music like 50 did in his time. He advised them to change the words and make their version of the songs they like. He observed they are using the same melody over and over.
Dr. Dre Defends New Rappers
Dre’s real name is Andre Young. Currently he is 58 years old. Kevin Hart asked for his opinion about the rappers in their fifties who don’t encourage or appreciate upcoming hip hop artists and the new hip hop celebrities.
“F*** that,” Dre replied. “Let me tell you something. Hip-hop is what it is. Anybody that’s talking about the state of hip-hop right now and talking about it from a negative place sounds like somebody’s f****** grandfather. You know what I’m saying? This is just what it is. Hip-hop is evolving. If you don’t like it, don’t listen to it.”
Dr. Dre acknowledged he doesn’t spend a lot of time listening to the latest hip hop songs and says he understands the desire for young rappers to utilize creative recording methods.
“They have everything at their fingertips right now, but you can’t be mad at that,” he observed. “This is what it is. If you don’t like it, m***********, do something about it. If you don’t like what’s happening right now, are you f****** strong enough or talented enough to do something new to change it, to do something that you like? Other than that, shut the f***up. That’s it. Stop hating.”
He Mentored His Peers
Later in the chat, Dre revealed that he mentored some of the older hip hop rappers like Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and Snoop Dogg. He performed with all these rappers at last year’s Super Bowl LVI halftime event.
Dre’s fans are looking forward to listening to his album titled Detox that has been in the pipeline for too long. At the start if this year, he surprised many by dropping The Chronic, his debut album to streaming companies.
While Young’s fans await his much-delayed album Detox, earlier this year, he re-released his seminal 1993 debut The Chronic to streaming services.
