Kendrick Lamar has announced May 13 as the release date of his long-awaited new album titled “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.”
The superstar was responding to another tweet that claimed that the MC is “Officially retired.” Kendrick tweeted a link to oklama.com, his website, which contained a press release from his pgLang company. And a Michael Jordan-inspired press release.
“The following statement was released today by oklama.com, through his company, pgLang at 11:00am PT in Los Angeles, CA,” the press release reads. “Album: ‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.’ Release date: 5/13/2022.”
The document continued, “All factual information for this release will come directly from this source only.”
Kendrick used the website last year to announce his upcoming album. He also revealed that the album would be his last for Top Dawg Entertainment, where he started his rap career.
“I spend most of my days with fleeting thoughts,” he wrote. “Writing. Listening. And collecting old Beach cruisers. The morning rides keep me on a hill of silence. I go months without a phone. Love, loss, and grief have disturbed my comfort zone, but the glimmers of God speak through my music and family. While the world around me evolves, I reflect on what matters the most. The life in which my words will land next.”
Kendrick continued, “As I produce my final TDE album, I feel joy to have been a part of such a cultural imprint after 17 years. The Struggles. The Success. And most importantly, the Brotherhood. May the Most High continue to use Top Dawg as a vessel for candid creators. As I continue to pursue my life’s calling. There’s beauty in completion. And always faith in the unknown. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts. I’ve prayed for you all. See you soon enough.”
The album is a follow-up of 2017’s DAMN, which debuted on top of the Billboard 200 and sold over 600,000 in its first week. The album even won the Grammys and the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Music.
Kendrick will be headlining a series of festivals this summer where he’ll likely perform songs from his new album.
