(GEMS RADIO)– Will Smith has issued a public apology to Chris Rock following the slapping incident at the Oscars. “I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong,” wrote Will Smith in a statement that was posted on his Instagram and Facebook.
He continued, “My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.”
Smith Wins Oscar After The Altercation
Rock was on stage to present an Oscar for the documentary feature when he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith being in G.I Jane because of her bald head. Will Smith initially laughed at the joke before walking on stage to slap Rock. Will then returned to his seat before yelling at Rock “Keep my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth!” It is yet unknown if Rock knew of Jada’s alopecia medical condition that causes hair loss.
The incident didn’t stop Smith from winning the Best Actor award for his performance as Richard Williams in King Richard. A teary Will Smith gave an acceptance speech where he apologized for his actions and to everyone except Chris Rock.
In the statement published across his socials, Smith apologized to the Academy, the attendees, the viewers, the Williams family, and King Richard Family before concluding, “I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us. I am a work in progress.”
The Academy Is Reviewing The Incident For Further Action
The Academy condemned Smith’s outburst in a statement that also revealed that they were reviewing the incident for further action
“The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct, and California law.”
Chris Rock is yet to address the matter publicly, although it is reported that he declined to press charges against the actor.
