(GEMS RADIO)– Hip Hop’s 2021 highest earners have just been announced. It appears that the pandemic did nothing to harm these rappers’ pockets. Judging by previous lists, the latest list is the wealthiest yet.
JAY-Z Tops The List of Hip Hop Earners
JAY-Z tops the list and cements his place as hip hop’s most valuable artist, bringing in $470 million in 2021 alone, his biggest annual earning yet.
The rapper turned filmmaker added it to his vast net worth of $1.5 billion by selling TIDAL to Jack Dorsey for $297 million. He also joined Jack’s Square platform as one of the directors.
Jay also sold half his stake at Armand de Brignac to LVMH for about $600 million. He reportedly earned $300 million in cash payment from the deal.
The list’s creator, former Forbes editor Zack O’Malley Greenburg, disclosed via Twitter that Jay was serious when he said he pays more in taxes than what you call money.
“Even if you assume he paid the capital gains rate of 20% on the bulk of his income after selling centimillion-dollar stakes in Tidal & Armand de Brignac, he’ll pay Uncle Sam more than any hip-hop act earned other than Ye.”
Kanye West at #2
Kanye West comes in at #2. The rapper earned $250 million the same year, thanks to his Yeezy footwear brand.
2022 has already started well for the Chicago rapper. Ye pulled in more than $2 million in less than a week on his DONDA 2 release on Stem Player.
Greenburg asserts that “annual income for this year’s top two is up more than tenfold from ten years ago.” In 2011, Jay-Z topped the list with $37 million earnings. Diddy came in second with $35 million.
Speaking of Diddy, the Bad Boy Records founder sits in third with $75 million in 2021 earnings.
